OSU student gets Human Rights Campaign internship
Columbus-Cory Oakley, a gay activist at Ohio State University, has been selected for a summer internship with the Human Rights Campaign.
"This really is an honor," Oakley said. "I am excited to have the opportunity to learn, and to contribute." Oakley will begin his internship on June 15 at the gay and lesbian lobbying group's Washington, D.C. office.
According to HRC political assistant Chad Lord, Oakley is one of 12 interns selected from different parts of the country. HRC received over 100 applicants for intern positions.
"It was exciting to see so many outstanding young people apply for our internship program,” Lord said. “We are all excited for our summer interns to join our team."
The Human Rights Campaign offers internships in the summer, fall, and spring. The program is designed to help equip interns with the skills needed for future leadership.
HRC also provides opportunities for young people to get involved in the electoral process. Through their Youth College for Campaign Training, HRC selects 20 activists from around the country to spend a week in an extensive campaign training with some of the best political professionals in the country.
As director of the Ohio Marriage Equality Campaign, Oakley impacted the
public's views of the gay marriage issue, both on and off campus. As a visible member of B-GALA, OSU's bisexual, gay and lesbian alliance, as well as his work with the university's Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Awareness Week, Oakley has demonstrated an ability to motivate fellow students in the fight toward equality.
It should also be noted that Oakley is an openly gay fraternity member in Acacia at OSU. He was also the keynote speaker at OSU's National Freedom to Marry Day.
"He has courageously spoken his truth in public, in the media and in OSU Greek social circles," said Columbus businessman Michael Caven, who is vice co-chair of this year's HRC dinner. "It's a real feather in Columbus' cap that one of our own has received this honor."
Two months ago MTV approached Oakley to film and produce a segment on attitudes about gay marriage in Columbus.
"They sent me high tech audio-video equipment," said Oakley. "I learned pretty quickly about lighting and interviewing techniques." The segment is due to air in late spring or early summer.
Oakley hopes to become a full-time activist and sees his HRC internship as an opportunity to learn more about grass roots and national organizing, lobbying and political strategy and policy.
"I plan to make the most of this opportunity," Oakley said.
